WPI Collaboration Hopes to Culminate

Michael Milliard is a Madison, Wisconsin-based technical solutions engineer with healthcare software maker Epic Systems Corporation. Before his role with Epic Systems Corporation, Michael Milliard attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) where he earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering.

In February, the school’s electrical and computer engineering department announced that it would be working with other institutions to devise 5G technology that would locate moving vehicles. The project will be spearheaded by a WPI research team, University of Massachusetts-Lowell, and the University of New Hampshire, with support through a research contract with Verizon.

The research will leverage the latest technology and innovations in wireless communications, traffic flow modeling and characterization, radio frequency propagation, and data frameworks. The hope is the collaboration will culminate in creating a platform using 5G bases that can locate vehicles in traffic without reliance on GPS technology.

The research project is expected to last 10 months, but it’s anticipated that this technology will revolutionize locating vehicles on city streets and highways. In the future, this 5G technology is expected to advance applications with autonomous vehicles and smart roadways.
